Local Scouts Presented Awards
By Nick Hills - District WebmasterOn Sunday 25th January over 40 awards were presented to young members of East Grinstead, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders. The awards recognise the experiences and developments young people have made during their time in the Scout Movement. Particularly notable was the presentation of the Queen’s Scout Award which is the highest award a young person can achieve and demonstrates a strong dedication and commitment to scouting and the wider community.
Brian Riches received the prestigious award presented by Ian Head from West Sussex Scouts. The presentation ceremony marks the conclusion of over 8 years of planning and work. The final stage in the award was an expedition which Brian completed on motorcycle navigating for 700 miles over 4 days across France avoiding major roads with 3 friends carrying all their food and equipment on the bikes and camping under canvas each night. Partly inspired by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman’s journeys Brian was the first person to complete the expedition on motorcycle, and has set a high benchmark for others to follow in the future. Other sections required for the Queen Scout Award, are extended periods of personal development and learning, community and environmental projects. Brian will attend a further Ceremony later in the year at Windsor Castle to be presented his award by a member of the Royal Family.
Deputy Mayor Lee Marmara presented some of the other awards, and concluded the presentation by thanking those present and how impressed he has been with the young people in our district and the important role Scouting plays within the community.
